To help prevent abuse, we allow a maximum of 5 client connections to the network from the same IP address. A trust is a setting on DareNET that allows this limit to be exceeded without being automatically banned.

To request a trust, go to the contact form and provide the following information in the message body:

  • DareNET account name and email address. We will use this information to contact you if your trust is being abused.
  • Number of connections required. Please be realistic, and only request as many as you need; you will be able to increase this later if needed.
  • The IP address to be trusted. This must be a static IP address. If you do not have a guaranteed static IP address you are not eligible for a trust. The only exception to this rule is for weekend events, such as a LAN party. In these cases, we will grant a one-time temporary trust not to exceed 5 days.
  • Reason for the trust. Please explain why you need more than 5 connections to DareNET.

The following guidelines must be adhered to if you'd like to keep a trust:

  • Clients connecting from a trusted IP address must follow DareNET's Terms of Service (ToS) and Acceptable Use Policy (AUP).
  • Clients connecting from a trusted IP address must serve a legitimate purpose, thus they must be actual users or bots that provide a useful task.
  • It is the responsibility of the trust contact to ensure compliance with all DareNET rules and policies. Failure to do so may result in clients connecting from the trusted IP addresses being banned along with the trust being revoked.
  • Should the trust contact lose access to their DareNET account, the trust shall be revoked.
  • All long term trusts must run an ident daemon (see RFC1413 for details) for every user. It is the trust contact's responsibility to ensure clients connecting from a trusted IP address are able to only use a single ident reply, and that they are not able to switch between multiple ident replies or modify it.
  • Unused IP addresses will expire after 60 days of no use.

If you have a trust and wish to change its settings, please join #help and open a ticket with H. for example:

/msg H Hi. I'd like to modify my trust. Trust ID #281, current number of users connected 25 / 30, email
address on the trust is user@example.com and IP on the trust is 123.321.456.234

The next available staff member will then message you to discuss what changes you'd like made. Please note the only settings that may be modified are: expiration date, number of allowed connections and IP addresses.

The following messages are displayed to users when disconnected for exceeding a connection limit:

Too many connections from your host

Normal duration: 30 minutes

To help prevent abuse, we only allow 5 clients connected from the same IP address. If you are being disconnected with this message, it means there are already 5 clients from your IP address connected.

Too many connections from your trust.

All trusts have a connection limit associated with them, which is shared among all IP addresses that are added for that trust. If you're receiving this message, then the limit has been reached.

If you are the trust contact, you may request a limit increase by asking in #help.

Too many connections from your username

Each user connecting from a trusted host must have a unique ident (username). If you are getting this message, it's because there are too many connections from your trust with the same ident.

IDENT required from your host

All connections from a trusted host must have a working IDENT response. Ensure your IDENT daemon is running and working properly. You may also want to check your firewall settings to ensure DareNET's servers can connect to it.
