Updates from the people who run DareNET

Scheduled Maintenance 22-10-2015

Completed - The scheduled maintenance has been completed.

We will be performing planned server maintenance on a subset of IRC servers (including those that host our account and channel management services) and the website on October 22, 2015 starting around 09:00 UTC (05:00 ET), which will require the physical hosts to be restarted. We expect downtime to be minimal, and urge users to use the irc.darenet.org round robin or webchat which will connect you to servers not scheduled in this maintenance window.

Privacy Policy updated (20AUG2015)

We've updated our privacy policy!

Because many of you are allergic to legalese, here's a plain English summary of what changed, for your convenience.

When DareNET first started, we used a rather boilerplate privacy policy, which contained a rather dubious clause (shown below). It wasn't long before some of our more privacy concious users raised their concerns and brought it to our attention. Slightly embarassed, we acknowledged the mistake and did what we should've done from the beginning, finished revising the policy to be an accurate description of our actual privacy practices.

2. Business Transfers: In some cases, we may choose to buy or sell assets. In these types of transactions, user information (in an aggregated form) is typically one of the business assets that is transferred. Moreover, if DareNET, or substantially all of its assets, were acquired, user information would be one of the assets that is transferred.

Theoretically, this clause would have allowed us to sell or buy any assests, such as user information (in aggregrate form, e.g., no personally identifiable information). Should we had elected to transfer ownership of the network to another individual or organization, user information such as email addresses and usernames could have been part of such an arrangement.

Alarming, we know! We removed this clause because DareNET does not buy or sell assets, nor does it share or sell personal information. DareNET keeps its "lights on" through the generous donations of its server sponsors and administrators, and time devoted by its staff. DareNET does not generate any sort of income or revenue. We donate our time and resources for the common good of the community.

So, we now have a privacy policy that is explicit about how we actually use and store user information. We will continue to comply with the commitment to privacy that we have stated in our Privacy Policy, and any forthcoming changes to this policy will continue to reflect our respect for your privacy and anonymity within the community.

Services Update (1.7.0)

Evo 1.7.0 is now live on the network. We fixed so many bugs the Orkin Man started calling US, including one where temporary change levels would expire prematurely in some circumstances.

Channel staff can now also track who is responsible for userlist additions and changes.
